What should I do after microneedling?

microneedling in Preston

If you’ve just had microneedling, or you’re thinking about booking it at our Preston city centre clinic, aftercare is one of the first things people ask about. What should you put on your skin? When can you wear make-up again? And how long will the redness last?

In this guide we set out clear, practical aftercare for microneedling, based on how we look after clients here and on published NHS patient advice. Your own plan may differ slightly after a consultation, because every skin responds differently.

A quick reminder: what microneedling does

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the surface of the skin. That prompts the skin’s natural repair response and can help soften the look of uneven texture, enlarged pores, some types of acne scarring and fine lines over a course of treatments.

Because the skin is briefly more open and sensitive afterwards, what you do in the first few days matters. Results build gradually and vary from person to person; aftercare will not “guarantee” an outcome, but it does help your skin settle comfortably.

If you’re still deciding how many appointments to plan, our guide on how many microneedling sessions you may need explains the usual course pattern.

What your skin may feel like afterwards

Straight after treatment, many people notice warmth and redness that looks a little like mild sunburn. Tightness, dryness or light flaking over the next couple of days is also common. Some people see pinpoint marks that settle quickly.

Redness often eases over one to two days, though sensitive skin can take a little longer. If anything feels increasingly painful, hot, swollen or looks infected, contact the clinic promptly, or speak to your GP or NHS 111 if you cannot reach us.

The first 24 hours

Keep things simple:

  • Use only the soothing products we recommend for you after treatment (often a cooling gel or a very plain moisturiser).
  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid touching it with unwashed hands.
  • Skip make-up on the treated area if you can.
  • Avoid hot water on the face, saunas, steam rooms and heavy sweating.
  • Do not pick, rub or peel any flaking skin.

NHS patient leaflets on microneedling aftercare commonly advise a cooling gel for the first day, then a simple moisturiser several times a day, and avoiding heat and swimming while the skin is settling. We will talk you through the exact products and timings for your appointment before you leave.

Days two to seven

As the redness settles, stick to a gentle routine:

  • A mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water.
  • A plain moisturiser to support the skin barrier.
  • Broad-spectrum sunscreen every day if you are outdoors, even in November. The NHS has clear advice on sunscreen and sun safety.
  • Hold off on retinoids, strong acids, scrubs and other active exfoliants until we say your skin is ready, often around a week later depending on how you heal.
  • Leave swimming pools, saunas and intense exercise until redness and any weeping have settled, commonly around 72 hours, unless we advise longer.

Mineral make-up is often fine once the skin has calmed, but wait for the go-ahead we give you on the day. If you also use home devices or peels, pause those until your review.

Sun care after microneedling

Treated skin can be more reactive to UV for about a week. Prefer shade in peak daylight, wear a hat if you are out, and reapply sunscreen as directed on the bottle. Avoid sunbeds and fake tan while the skin is recovering. Steady daily SPF is also useful between sessions in a course, because UV exposure can undo some of the texture and tone improvements you are working towards.

When microneedling may need to wait

We will assess suitability at consultation. Active, inflamed acne, infection, open wounds or a recent tan can mean postponing treatment. If you have an ongoing skin condition, your GP or a dermatologist should diagnose and manage it. The British Association of Dermatologists and British Skin Foundation both publish reliable information on common skin conditions.

All of our treatments are for adults aged 18 and over. The NHS also has helpful guidance on choosing who will carry out a cosmetic procedure.

Common aftercare questions

Can I wash my face the same day?

Yes, gently, with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser if we have said that is fine for you. Avoid very hot water and rubbing with a flannel for the first day or two.

When can I exercise again?

Light activity is usually fine once you feel comfortable, but sweaty workouts, hot yoga and saunas are best left until heat and redness have settled, often around 72 hours. Sweat on freshly treated skin can sting and increase the chance of spots.

Will my skin peel?

Some people notice light flaking. Keep moisturising and do not pick. If peeling is heavy or painful, get in touch so we can check everything is settling as expected.

How soon will I see a change?

Any glow in the first week is often from surface renewal. Collagen remodelling continues for weeks after each session, which is why microneedling is usually planned as a course rather than a single visit. We review progress with you rather than promising a fixed timeline.
