How many microneedling sessions will I need?

microneedling in Preston

If you have been reading up on microneedling, one question probably keeps coming up: how many sessions will I actually need? It is one of the most common questions we are asked at our Preston city centre clinic. The honest answer is that it depends on your skin, what you would like to improve and how your skin responds. There are some general patterns, though, and knowing them can help you set realistic expectations.

What does microneedling actually do?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the surface of the skin. This prompts the skin’s natural repair response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that help keep skin firm and supple. Over time, this can help to soften the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, enlarged pores and some types of acne scarring.

Collagen is not rebuilt overnight. The skin’s repair process carries on for weeks after each session, and new collagen continues to mature for months. This is the main reason microneedling is usually planned as a course rather than a one-off appointment.

So, how many microneedling sessions will I need?

As a general guide, many people are recommended a course of around three to six sessions. Published studies and professional guidance commonly describe courses in this range, although the right number for you can only be decided after your skin has been assessed. Factors that can make a difference include:

  • Your skin concern – a general refresh for dull skin or mild texture issues may need fewer sessions than more established concerns such as acne scarring.
  • The type of scarring – shallow, rolling scars tend to respond better than deep, narrow scars, which may need more sessions or a different approach.
  • Your age and skin condition – collagen production naturally slows as we get older, so skin responds at a different pace from person to person.
  • How your skin recovers – each session should only go ahead once your skin has fully settled from the last one.

Many practitioners prefer to start with a smaller block of treatments, then review progress before deciding whether further sessions would be worthwhile. That way, you are not committing to more treatment than your skin needs. Some people later choose occasional maintenance sessions, but you do not need to decide that at the start.

How far apart should sessions be?

For facial microneedling, sessions are typically spaced around four to six weeks apart. This gives the skin time to recover and allows the collagen-building process to get under way before it is stimulated again. Closer sessions are not a shortcut to better results. We will advise on the right interval for you, based on how your skin has responded.

When might I start to see results?

Timelines vary. Some people notice their skin looking brighter and feeling smoother within a couple of weeks of their first session. Changes in texture, fine lines or scarring tend to be more gradual, and are often easier to appreciate over a course of sessions and in the months after the final treatment.

Microneedling can help to improve the appearance of the skin, but results cannot be guaranteed, and it will not make scars or lines disappear completely for everyone.

What are the possible side effects?

As with any skin treatment, microneedling carries some risks, and it is important to understand these before you go ahead. Common, usually short-lived effects include redness similar to mild sunburn for a day or two, swelling or tightness, dryness or light peeling, and pinpoint bleeding or occasional bruising.

Less commonly, microneedling can lead to infection, a flare-up of cold sores, or changes in skin colour (darker or lighter patches), which may occasionally be long-lasting. Following your aftercare advice carefully, including keeping the skin clean and protecting it from the sun, can help to reduce the risk of problems. If you notice anything unexpected after treatment, please contact the clinic or seek medical advice.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Microneedling is not right for everyone, which is why a consultation always comes first. It may not be suitable, or may need to be postponed, if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have an active skin infection, cold sore or inflamed acne in the treatment area
  • have a history of keloid or raised scarring, or your skin heals slowly
  • have a bleeding disorder, a weakened immune system, or take medication that affects bleeding
  • have a recent tan or sunburn, or are taking, or have recently taken, certain acne medications

Please tell us about any medical conditions, medication or recent treatments so we can advise you properly. If microneedling is not the best fit, there may be other options to discuss, such as chemical peels.

Is autumn a good time to start a course?

Many people find autumn and winter a practical time to start microneedling. With shorter days and lower UV levels, it can be easier to keep newly treated skin protected while it recovers, although daily SPF is still important all year round. As sessions are spaced several weeks apart, a course naturally runs across a few months, so it is worth bearing this in mind when planning. You can read more in our guide to the benefits of microneedling in winter.

Between sessions, gentle cleansing, good hydration and a broad-spectrum sunscreen are a sensible starting point. As an authorised SkinCeuticals retailer, we are happy to recommend products to suit your skin and advise on when to use them after treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Will one microneedling session make a difference?

Some people notice brighter, smoother-feeling skin after one session, but changes to texture, fine lines and scarring are usually more gradual, which is why a course is often recommended.

Does microneedling hurt?

Most people describe a prickling or scratching sensation. A numbing cream is commonly used to help with comfort, although some people still find parts of the treatment uncomfortable.
