Anti-aging treatments are currently more popular than ever. Whether it’s a traditional home remedy, wrinkle cream, a chemical peel, dermal fillers, Botox or even plastic surgery, we as a society are incredibly concerned with maintaining our youthful appearance. Botox, or anti-wrinkle injections, are one of the most popular options available, but how do Botox injections reduce the signs of aging? Well, here at The Skin and Wellbeing Clinic, we are leading Botox and skin care professionals. As a result, we have produced this guide to help explain how Botox works, and what you can expect from anti-wrinkle injections.

What is Botox?

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum and other associated bacteria. This is a neurotoxin that can selectively paralyze muscles, temporarily relieving muscle function. As a result, it has been used medically for treating an extensive number of complex conditions, including, but not limited to:

excessive sweating

myofascial pain syndrome

chronic migraines

overactive bladder

How do Botox injections reduce the signs of ageing?

So, how does this neurotoxin work to reduce, and prevent the signs of aging? Well, wrinkles and lines associated with wrinkles form over time because of repeated muscle contractions. When you frown or smile for example, and your muscles contract, this pulls your skin into place. As you age, the skin loses elasticity. So, instead of bouncing back into position, the skin instead forms lines. Because Botox relaxes muscles, it can be injected directly into problem areas on the face, the forehead and around the eyes for example. This means that those specific muscles will not be able to contract, drastically reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Instead, you will look younger, and your skin will be smoother and firmer.

Can Botox prevent wrinkles?

As wrinkles form over time, from repeated muscle movement, Botox is also effective for preventing these wrinkles from occurring. As with any anti-aging treatment, prevention is better than cure. So using Botox before deep lines and wrinkles become a problem, can help you maintain your youthful looks, and prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place.

How quickly will the effects of Botox be noticeable?

Botox is a treatment that only takes a short amount of time. You can simply pop into your appointment, and then continue with the rest of your day. But will the effects be noticeable straight away? Well, actually it will take a few days for you to start to notice a difference, and up to a week for the treatment to really take effect. This is because it takes time take for your skin to develop new collagen to fill in any existing lines and wrinkles, caused by the muscles contracting. But this process is aided by relaxing the muscles, as once they are fully relaxed, the depressions will smooth and soften on their own.
