Dermal fillers to target perioral lines

Dermal fillers to target perioral lines

Fine lines and wrinkles are two of the most visible signs of ageing that can effect facial skin, particularly on the forehead, around the mouth, and around the eyes. But there are several different aesthetic procedures and treatments available that can help to reduce these visible signs of ageing, including chemical peels, anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. And here at The Skin and Wellbeing Clinic is Preston, we specialise in delivering high quality, effective, anti-ageing solutions. One of the facial areas frequently affected by lines and wrinkles is the perioral area. But what is this? And how do we use dermal fillers to target perioral lines?

What are perioral  lines?

Perioral lines are linear wrinkles that spread out from the border of the mouth. These often start as very fine lines, but can become deeper and more pronounced over time. In this area of the face these lines are often hard to cover up, and when applying lipstick, you may notice that it will spread into these lines.

What are the causes of perioral lines?

Perioral lines are caused by a number of different things, including:

Smoking – these lines are frequently called smokers lines, because of the prevalence of these lines among people who are long term smokers. The underlying orbicularis orris muscle is used more frequently among smokers, and this overuse tends to result in an increase of fine lines and wrinkles.

Natural ageing process – even people who have never smoked can develop noticeable perioral lines. There is often a genetic pre-disposition for this development, but the natural ageing process plays a part. As the face ages, the skin loses tone and tightness, as well as volume, as does the underlying muscle. And this can all lead to the development of more prominent perioral lines. High UV exposure can also accelerate this process.

Using dermal fillers to target perioral lines

One of the most effective treatment options to target perioral lines, dermal fillers can transform this area of your face. But how does this work? Well, by injecting small amounts of hyaluronic acid into the wrinkles areas, the lost volume can be replaced. This effectively “fills” the hollow line areas, while increasing the projection of the lips, making these lines much less noticeable. As a result, you’re skin will be hydrated, and younger looking.

Choose a professional aesthetic practitioner

Professional anatomical assessment and diagnosis is essential for any dermal filler injections, including those around the lips and perioral area. You should be sure to work with professional practitioners, like us here at the Skin and Wellebing Clinic. As leading practitioners we are always aware of the dental profile and arcade, the relationship of the teeth, the lips to the nose, and the chin. We are also sure to consider both the frontal and profile view, for the best possible, natural results.

In addition, dermal filler injections can come with their own level of risk. Choosing a professional and qualified practitioner can reduce and limit this level of risk, so that you have the safest possible treatment.
